George William Hendricks

Hendricks, George William age 92, of Grand Rapids passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Born August 9, 1932 in Kalamazoo, the son of Peter & Elizabeth (Karmelk) Hendricks George graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School and started out in the construction business building homes during the 1950’s and 60’s. In the mid 1960’s he went to work for the Grand Rapids Post Office, retiring after 30 years. George served in the US Army during the Korean War, with the 5th Regiment Combat Team where he was nicknamed “Stretch”, was a former member of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard and was very active in the union labor field, where he believed in justice for is fellow workers. His philosophy was “try to make a difference”. George is survived by his children Mark Peter Hendricks and Robin Renee (Jeff) Borton; 3 grandchildren Jena Rose (Daniel) Faling, Jacob Donald Grzeszak and Arlenea Rae (Paul) Mead; 4 great grandchildren and one on the way; sisters in law Peggy Hendricks and Shirley Baker; brother in law Ronald Robinson and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife Vera of 71 years, sisters Willy Gina Alberts, Marie B. Goodwin and Alice Britten, brother John L. Hendricks, brothers in law and sisters in law Marvin Robinson, Larry Baker and Lee (Leo) Marshall. Visitation will be 11 AM to 1 PM Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 with Funeral Services 1 PM. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to the Disabled American Veterans.
