Daniel Arthur Cushman

Daniel Arthur Cushman, husband and father, passed away Saturday evening in his sleep after a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 19, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Paul and Daphne (Johnson) Cushman. He lived and worked in Detroit for 39 years before moving to Greenville in March 1976. He attended Cass Technical High School until 1955. Upon graduating, he then attended St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas, from 1956 to 1958. Returning to Detroit, he married Carol Ann Trapp in 1959 and worked for the City of Detroit Landscaping Department before starting his own company, Cushman Tree, in 1964. In 1974, he bought a Snap-on Tools franchise and sold tools in and around western Michigan. In 1980, he joined Consumers Power as part of a travel crew that serviced fossil fuel and nuclear power plants across the state of Michigan until he retired in 2001. He then worked part-time for Klackle’s Apple Orchard. Daniel loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing with his brothers, and in 1973, he made a substantive donation to the Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary in the Keweenaw Peninsula. In his spare time, he spent many a day gardening in his yard on Washington Street in Greenville. He would often distribute flowers to many eating establishments and businesses around town and could be found nearly every morning with his coffee clutch for breakfast at Margo’s. Daniel is survived by his sisters Diane Rose of Manistee and Dolly King of Independence, Kansas; his brothers Paul Cushman (Kyoko) of Livonia and Peter Cushman (Andrea) of Farmington Hills; his four children, Christopher Cushman from Toronto, Peter Cushman (Tina) from Greenville, Marie Garza (Albert, deceased) from Grand Rapids, and Matthew Cushman (Nikki) from Ada; eight grandkids: Niccole Coston (Dave), Danielle Peterman (Josh), Kaysie Cushman (Dylan Stray), Isabelle and Jonathan Garza, Megan, Katie, and Danny; and four great-grandkids: Mackenzie (Josh's oldest), Damon, Elijah, and Piper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Cushman, in 2007.
